They are the young talents of A-Star Interactive, Singapore’s leading publisher of children’s language software – and the three children of its founders, Patrick and Lay Hwa (2 ex-teachers).

Although Nicholas was in the Gifted Education all along, the boys were not super-dupers in their class until they reached Sec 4. In fact, we had our share of trudging to their schools to face both concerned and irate teachers. And, all three of them were kindergarten dropouts! (We will spare everyone the details!)

Parents ask us for advice on their children’s education. All we can say is, give children a little time to explore their talents. But give them every opportunity to develop their language skills. Expose them to reading early. Reading develops their abstract thinking and creativity, and their language skills.

Reading makes the difference!

They have to be exposed to the sound of the language* as well. They have to hear people using the language – and using it well.

One of our staff members, who despite having an MBA from overseas, laments, “I can never get that word (sugar) right. Now, when I am overseas, I just point to it!”

Early phonemic awareness* is a MUST !

People tell us we’re very fortunate that our children are doing so well.

We’re happy that our children are happy. But in the end, it is their love for us that brings us the fulfilment.

So, instil the positive values during their growing years. And from the bumpy ride we had with our children, allow us to say:

Don’t give up on your children

and they will not give up on themselves.

Success is in each child’s hands – to be defined by each child’s values and life, and the love he receives. Good luck!
